March 8th is usually a day in the Church in which we remember St. John of God. Each Saint has a feast day, set aside so that we can learn from that person and give thanks for the good things that they did for God and for the Church. Some of the time the Saint will make an impact on the readings used for Mass.
St. John of God was a Spanish Saint who lives in the 16th Century. He becamse very close to God at a young age and started to have a special affection for the poor and the sick. He believed that they weren't being treated very well and so he made it his life's work to look after them.
Soon enough, other people joined John in his work. He started a society dedicated to caring for others. This society is still around today!.
A good thing to ask ourselves in Lent is how much we care about people who aren't as fortunate as ourselves. Or rather, what we actually do about it. We probably all know that there are people worse off than us. And we probably know a few simple things that we can do to help out. But how often do we actually do it?
 Pray
Loving Father,
You know the needs of the world. You know when any of your children are in need and you know when any of them are suffering.
We ask you today to be with those who need you most, and we ask you to move in our hearts and minds this Lent so that we may more and more charitable to those who need us.
Amen.
 Challenge
Your challenge today is to think about something positive that you can do for those who are less fortunate than you. It doesn't have to be anything big or dramatic.
Over the next week or so, try to put that thing into practice.
