Footsteps through Lent...

[Thursday after Ash Wednesday | Feb 18th]

Reflect

'Happy the man who has placed his trust in the Lord'

This passage is taken from the first psalm and it appears in the readings at today's Mass.

Somebody who is able to completely put their trust in God must be very happy indeed. But for most people, it's proably not as simple as that. Putting your trust completely in something else - even God - is a hard thing to do. It goes against our instincts and takes us out of our comfort zone. We like to be in control of our own lives. We don't like to take a back seat while somebody else pulls all the strings.

In many ways, though, that's not really what trusting in God is all about. It's not about withdrawing from life and being silent. In actual fact, it probably animates us and brings us into the world more than anything else.

Trusting in God means knowing that he is always by our side. Trusting in God means being confident to turn to him in prayer whenever we want to. Trusting in God means knowing that even if things get tricky, we know that in the end everything will turn out for the best, because ultimately God is in control!

Maybe we can use this Lent as a chance to ask ourselves how readily we trust in God.

Do we always turn to God when things get tricky? Do we always turn to him in thanks when things are going well? Do we always make our decisions realising that God is at work in all things?

Pray

Loving Father, Happy is the man who trusts in you. Your love and mercy and the amazing beauty of your creation know no limits.

Help us this Lent to me more aware of your presence and to see you at work in our lives and in the world. Help us to believe that you are with us in everything we do.

Amen.

Challenge

Your challenge today is to put aside five minutes to pray.

If it helps you, say some set prayers like the Our Father or the Hail Mary.

Or, if you prefer, just close your eyes and talk to God as a friend. Tell him what you are going through at the minute and ask him to help you and those around you.

Good luck :)
